** Forget about metal halide grow lights - they are too hot and too expensive to run. I now recommend these LED grow lights. Please refer to the home page for more information. **
Many indoor gardeners start out their seedlings under standard fluorescent grow lights. This method works fine as long as the vegetative area you wish to cover does not exceed 3 fixtures and your plants stay under 12 inches tall. Even still, you will not be able to get the most out of your plants without introducing the appropriate amount of light in the blue and red part of the spectrum. Continued below.

If you wish to allow your plants to experience the best vegetative growth they can, light in the blue spectrum is what is needed. Thick and stocky plants capable of bearing more fruit and flowers can be achieved by using metal halide grow lights. The blue light emitted by MH grow lights allows for vigorous growth in the vegetative stage - just be sure to provide adequate airflow and strict temperature control to compensate for the heat output by this high intensity bulb.
