Tips For Rooftop Hydroponic Gardening – Urban Farming At Its Best

Rooftop Hydroponic GardeningMany people who live in the city do not have the space and adequate soil to build gardens.  Community gardens are also competitive with waiting lists that continue to grow.  To overcome this lack of garden accommodations in the city, more and more people are turning to hydroponic rooftop gardening.

A hydroponic rooftop garden is an effective alternative to other gardening methods and is a low impact solution for growing fruits, vegetables and herbs all year long.  Building a hydroponic garden is a simple task.

To begin with, you should decide on what plants or herbs you want to grow and how many of each.  Once you decide the amount of plants you want to grow, you can determine the size of the area you would need.

Your container for growing depends on your preference.  Many people use plastic bins or pipes where they will cut holes to place the pots of plants.  You can also buy seedlings or grow your own seedlings from actual seeds.  Once you have your seedlings, you will have to take them out of their pots and gently rinse the roots to remove most of the dirt.

Hydroponic nutrients are very important to have for healthy growing.  You can make your own solution or buy one pre-made.  The solution should contain water and fertilizer to an average strength of 20-24 CF and PH ranging from 5.5 to 6.5.

Once the seedlings are washed, you can place them in a growing medium such as Rockwool or Hydroton and then into the hydroponic solution. Having a PH tester and CF meter can help you check the strength of nutrients for your plants on a daily basis.  TO control the chemical balance of nutrients and water, you should add water as it will evaporate on its own.

Take some time to watch your plants grow, which is a process that can take 12 to 18 weeks.  Although you are not using soil, you may still encounter pests.  Be sure to keep pests away and prevent your roots from rotting.  Once your plants begin to grow, you can harvest the fruits, vegetable and herbs when they are ready.

As a city dweller, you will find that hydroponic rooftop gardening is a simple way of growing your own food that will taste better than store-bought and will reduce environmental impact.
